Intentional Fallacy

We finished our MATX 604 group project today! The film is called Intentional Fallacy. It's a stop-action film made from over 2500 digital stills and hand-drawn graphics. The graphics were manipulated in Photoshop and the video was edited using Adobe Premiere Pro.

My group consisted of Jenn Figg, Jennifer Smith, Sean Stewart and Melinda White. Sean, Jennifer and Melinda came up with the brilliant story idea, and handled the producing and directing of the shoots. Jenn Figg and I did a lot of the photography (Sean and Jennifer shot a bit too). Jenn created the drawings and Sean mastered all the Photoshop post-production. I punched the keys and did the physical editing, but we all conspired on the content and final product. Patrick Scott Vickers scored the piece with original music and it's perfect! We hired actors by hosting a casting call in the InSight studio and began production a week later. We had 4 shooting days and many days of post-production. We shot all around Richmond...the Canal Walk, Maymont, Franklin Street, Cafe Gutenberg, The Civil War Ironworks, the mural outside of Kuba Kuba and the Main Street train station. Richmond is VERY photogenic!

I am REALLY proud of this little film! So much so that I already created a WithoutABox account, posted the video to YouTube and we're entering it into a bunch of film festivals! Congratulations and big thank you's to my group for being so awesome.

Here's the video (crappy, compressed version, but hey, it's online!)

Gardening at Night

In midst of all the luminous turmoil of the last few weeks of the semester, I managed to muster enough time to not only go to Lowe's and buy flowers and plants and mulch and containers for my postage stamp of a front garden, I also managed to plant everything I bought and spread all the stinky cypress chunks around it! All the bulbs I planted last fall are making faces at me: the tulip bulbs are in near full bloom, the day lily bulbs have sprouted and even a few hasta shoots are poking out here and there. Last night I planted half the petunias (I bought 2 flats), I potted two tomato plants and two hungarian pepper plants, planted one tomato plant in the ground (as a science experiment), sowed aster, marigold, snapdragon and morning glory seeds and mulched around where I had worked. Then I watered and took these pics. Tonight, I planted the last of the petunias, weeded and finished mulching. The little space that was covered in crappy weeds and junk ivy up to the knees when we moved in is looking pretty darned cute right now! Of course, the only time I was able to commit to my gardening occurred after class the past few nights. So here I am, in the dark, digging holes, planting flowers, spreading mulch and dirt and drinking beer. My hands and feet are filthy. I love my dirty feet! My blue jeans have turned dirt/mulch brown. They look very high fashion. In my past and/or future lives, I am a farmer.

Before I share the visuals of my great triumphs in the 10x 8 plot -- I want to thank those who have have submitted seed money to my Budapest garden! Mickey Dutta, Selmin Kara, Lill Gwizdala, Marcel Cornis-Pope, Deb Wenger, Brian Boyer, Cortney McLean, Dana Drew and Gary Cendrowski. I've raised $508 so far! Thank you thank you thank you!!! There's no deadline on donations, so make yourself famous! Donate today!

Goodness, I still have plans to plant beans, corn, radishes and onions in the back yard!

Begging!

Dear Friends and Family,

I'm honored to have been granted a very prestigious Artist's Residency in Budapest, Hungary, through the Hungarian Multicultural Center, this coming summer from July 15 - August 7th! Out of 328 applicants, I was one of a dozen selected. Amazing.

While there, I'll begin the research and pre-production phase for my PhD Project of Excellence -- a documentary film (and 70 page written thesis!) on the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and my mother's experiences living through this tumultuous time in Stalin-controlled Hungary, her father's life as a revolutionary freedom-fighter and the tragedy of her mother's death at age 28. Just 7 years old, my mother, her brother Peter and her father Istvan, on the day of her mother's funeral, fled Hungary by cover of night, through old WWII mine fields, to become refugees in Yugoslavia. A year later, by way of the Red Cross, they came to the United States. My grandfather never even knew where his wife was buried - my mother has never returned to Hungary. This film proposes to find my grandmother's resting place, tell the story of my family and seek closure by filling the gaps and reuniting my family, and the world, with our cultural roots, history and heritage.

But, I can't do it without a little help. And here's where I beg.

I'm not asking for much, but I am, humbly, searching for donations for my residency fees -- which total about $4500 for the three weeks (room, board, airfare, beer, bribes). Whether you can give $1 or $100 to help fund my summer residency -- any amount of generosity is greatly appreciated.

My pledge to you: YOUR NAME will be in the credits of the film! Granted, this glorious accolade might take 3 - 5 years to actualize, but it is a rewarded donation nonetheless! I'll also send out periodic updates of my progress on this blog. My goal after this residency is to accumulate enough grant money to return to Hungary in two years with my mother, a talented crew (Christian, Dana and Marianne - more if budgets allow!) and a lot of research under my belt to complete a fantastic, and hopefully award-winning film! Oscar? You bet!

I've talked about The Hungary Project for years, now it's finally real and kick-starting. And that's a bit scary. But I was born to make this film and tell this story.

Donations can be made safely and securely via Paypal (just click the link!) or if you prefer, I do take checks! Our address is available upon request.

Thank you so much for any and all support you can give - from you heart, your bank account, or both! Please feel free to call or email with any questions.

Love & Happiness,
Kristine
